NASS to Re-Survey Operators With Unharvested Small Grains

Issued September 30, 2011 by the Agricultural Statistics Board of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service. For more information contact Lance Honig at (202) 720-2127 or

Due to delays in this year’s harvest, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will re-survey small grains growers in several states. Operators will be asked to verify and update, if necessary, the acreage, yield, production and stock estimates for barley, oats, Durum wheat and other spring wheat.

When producers were surveyed earlier this month, there was significant unharvested acreage of barley and oats in Idaho, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, and Washington; significant unharvested acreage of Durum wheat in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota; and a large proportion of other spring wheat acreage not yet harvested in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington. The unharvested area and expected production were included in the totals released on September 30. These totals were based on a sample of producers growing small grains this year.

As a result of this re-surveying effort, NASS may release updated forecast for small grains in its November 9 report.  Crop Production and all NASS reports are available online at
