FLORIDA: The forecast of avocados for certified shipments for the 2000-2001 season is 950,000 bushels. This is 13 percent more than was shipped in the previous season. However, that season's shipments were reduced by droppage of fruit caused by Hurricane Irene which passed near Homestead on October 15, 1999.
Estimated shipments through July at 218,100 bushels are over 30 percent greater than the previous two seasons. Summer varieties are heavy set and good demand and quality are reported.

Bearing acres (trees planted in 1996 and earlier) are estimated at 6,100. Trees planted since the storm in 1992 are bearing increasing amounts of fruit.

CALIFORNIA: Shipments through July total 5,494,000 bushel equivalents, more than the 4,291,000 bushels to the same date last season. Three months remain in the marketing season with the total crop expected to be 6,430,000 bushel equivalents.
