Canned and frozen pack statistics were compiled by the Florida Citrus Processors Association. Where data are from other sources, appropriate references appear. Records of the Division of Fruit and Vegetables, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, were used in preparing production and utilization estimates. The Citrus Administrative Committee assisted in assembling these data. Many producers, shippers, processors, sales agencies, transportation firms, and others associated with the citrus industry voluntarily supplied basic data used to develop these statistics. Their contributions are sincerely appreciated. This report was assembled under the direction of Jeffrey K. Geuder, Robert R. Terry, Candice T. Erick, and Rhonda L. Johnson of the Florida Agricultural Statistics Service. Ground crews identify all the State's groves by fruit type, row spacing, and year in which set. Photo interpreters in the Orlando office then delineate the groves by variety blocks on photo transparencies at a scale of 1 inch to 660 feet. Variety blocks are measured with planimeters to obtain acreage and then indexed by land section. The design of the inventory survey allows for quick and economical updating. Since 1966, the citrus belt has been resurveyed each second winter to determine changes. Photographing begins in November when weather conditions are most favorable and is generally completed in 80 to 90 days. The same three-mile-wide flight lines established in 1966 are photographed on each succeeding flight. Approximately 14,000 square miles of photography are obtained at a 1 to 30,000 scale. The last statewide survey was conducted as of January 2000. New plantings increased but gross loss was also higher, resulting in a net loss of 12,985 acres since January 1998. Decreases in acreage and tree numbers were noted for each of the grapefruit categories and most of the specialty citrus. Acreage and tree numbers continue to climb for Hamlin, Valencia, and other midseason oranges, and Honey tangerines. Citrus acreage increased in the Central and Western areas. Photographing began in November 2001 for the survey underway. Field work will update acreage records as of January 2002. County Production Estimates of citrus production by counties were prepared using objective survey data obtained from the citrus crop estimates program. Production for Florida has been distributed to counties based on the biennial citrus tree census, limb count survey data adjusted for droppage to end of season, and size data at maturity. Tree numbers by county which are used in the estimates were obtained from the latest tree census. Productivity per tree is obtained from several objective fruit surveys including limb count, size, and droppage. Because of the statistical sampling design, counties with higher production in general have a greater number of samples and, therefore, estimates for these counties can be considered more reliable. Thus, for the same reason, estimates for the production areas are more reliable than for the individual counties. S. is down five percent from 1999-2000 but the fourth highest on record. Decreases were noted in Florida, California, and Arizona. Florida produced 76 percent of the total, California contributed 21 percent, and Texas and Arizona combined for the remaining three percent. Florida's total production of 279 million boxes is down nearly seven percent. Utilization of oranges is down four percent and grapefruit is down 14 percent. Following the record high season, tangerine production is down 20 percent to the fourth largest crop on record. Limes fell to a near record level after six consecutive seasons of increases. K-Early Citrus Fruit tied the record low set in 1997-98. This is the smallest tangelo crop since 1968-69. Temple production is the lowest recorded since the series began in 1953-54. Lemon production is 56 percent higher than that of the previous season's incomplete harvest. Bearing acreage is down less than one percent to 756 thousand acres. In oranges, the shift continues from early- midseasons and Valencias account for over 50 percent of the acreage for the first time since 1985-86. Grapefruit is down five percent. Lime acreage, which peaked in 1982-83 at 7,300, was rebounding from Hurricane Andrew but is now 1,200 and the lowest on record due to recent canker losses. Honey tangerines have steadily increased for the past 14 seasons. Bearing acres of K-Early Citrus are limited. Declines were noted for the remainder of specialty fruit. California's bearing acreage is down less than one percent and production is reduced two percent. Orange production is down eight percent with fresh utilization higher but processing lower than in recent seasons. Grapefruit production is down 10 percent from last season and the lowest since 1981-82. Utilization of tangerines is down 16 percent but lemon production is the greatest since 1980-81. Texas, the only state with increased production, recorded a 24 percent gain making this crop the largest since 1982-83. Bearing acreage has held steady for the past three seasons. Production of oranges is up over 30 percent from last season and grapefruit production is up 21 percent, marking the highest levels following freeze-affected 1984-85 and 1990-91 when production fell to zero. Arizona's citrus production is down one percent with decreases in oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines offsetting the 16 percent gain in lemons. Bearing acreage is down four percent. Value The preliminary on-tree value of all citrus for the 2000-01 season fell below $1.0 billion for the first time since 1996-97. This crop valued at $760 million, the lowest since the $725 million of the 1985-86 season, reflects a decline of over 30 percent from the previous season. Price per box and value of production are down for oranges, grapefruit, and most of the specialty fruit. The value of production for all oranges fell 27 percent. The value of the grapefruit crop is less than half of values recorded in 1998-99 and 1999-00 but higher than the two previous seasons. Separate data is no longer available for the seedy grapefruit variety. Of the specialty fruit, only K-Early Citrus Fruit and lemons recorded gains in value of production. The average price per box of fruit is higher for K-Early Citrus Fruit, Honey tangerines, all tangerines, and the acid fruit (limes and lemons). The price per box is down from the previous season for grapefruit varieties and Temples and is down for the second consecutive season for orange varieties and tangelos. Preliminary value is based on that part of the crop priced at harvest, which accounts for all of the fresh fruit and about 40 percent of the processed. Nearly one-half of the processed oranges were priced but the figure for processed grapefruit and tangerines is about one-quarter of the total. Foreign Exports Fresh fruit exports totaled 22.3 million 4/5 bushel cartons, nearly the same as last season. Canada accounts for the most receipts of Florida oranges and specialty fruit while Japan receives the most grapefruit. More details are listed on page 39. A total of 10.5 million gallons of FCOJ was exported, mostly to Canada, and Florida exported 7.1 million gallons of FCGJ. Although FCOJ exports have declined 50 percent from 1997-98, FCGJ exports have almost doubled since 1998-99. Frozen Concentrate The final FCOJ yields, reported by the Florida Citrus Processors Association, were higher for all oranges (1.580179) and early-midseason fruit (1.540728) but lower for the late oranges (1.645727) than the previous season's and all were below the records set in 1998-99. For fruit going into concentrate, the price per box was lower for all varieties. The price per pound of solids fell below $1.00 for grapefruit as well as oranges. The term "on-tree" relates to fruit returns to the grower after the costs of picking, hauling, and packing have been removed. Prices are based on records of commercial fresh fruit sales and processed fruit returns. Each season, beginning with the first month that three percent of a fruit type is harvested, monthly estimates are computed. Reports from fresh fruit sales organizations and from packers provide data for an average f.o.b. price. Processors report an average spot and cash price for fruit delivered to their plants. From these values, an estimated charge for picking, hauling, and packing is deducted to arrive at an on-tree price. The anticipated box utilization for the month is used to combine the fresh and processing price to obtain an average price for all methods of sales. At the season's end, monthly price averages are computed and weighted by boxes utilized, to provide the preliminary season average price. A year later, after most processed products are sold, cooperatives and firms with participation plans report prices of fruit they handled. These prices, combined with the spot and cash prices collected earlier, are weighted together by varieties to determine the final processing price received bygrowers. From this price, charges for picking, hauling, and packing, as estimated by University of Florida economists, are deducted to arrive at the final on-tree price received by growers. These preliminary figures for the season just ended, the revised figures for the previous season, and county production by type are released annually in late September. Packout Rates Fresh prices shown in this publication are for “pure fresh” or 100% packout. Grading diverts a portion of the crop from fresh use. Returns at processing plants for this diverted fruit will generally be less than for field run fruit because of extra costs. In order to compare fresh prices shown in this publication to the individual grower's return it is necessary to calculate a derived price for that crop. Below is an example and a blank table for calculating fresh returns based on packout rates. The example describes a delivery of 1,000 boxes with a packout rate of 60% (0.60 in decimal format). At this rate, 600 boxes (1,000 X 0.60) are shipped fresh at a price of $9.50 per 1 3/5 bushel box equivalent. The remaining 400 boxes (1,000 X 0.40) are eliminations which are hauled to a processing facility and receive a price of $1.20. The grower receives $5,700.00 for the fresh portion and $480.00 for the processed portion. Dividing the total amount of $6,180.00 by the total of 1,000 boxes results in a derived price of $6.18 per box. Groves in all areas of Florida's citrus belt needed rain, so growers and caretakers were irrigating in an effort to maintain good tree and fruit condition. Temperatures dipped into the upper 20s on a few mornings the last of January and helped retard some of the feathery new growth trying to break out. February was generally dry with spotty showers and warmer temperatures at the month's end. New growth and bloom buds began showing the first of March and slowly progressed throughout the month. General dry conditions prevailed with only a few scattered showers. Irrigation helped promote and sustain new growth and bloom buds. The bloom cycle lasted through the first two weeks of April. It was May before the first hard rain soaked most of the citrus belt. Hot and dry conditions continued, however, until the middle of June when the summer rains finally arrived. By this time, new crop fruit was already smaller than normal. Most of July and August were hot with scattered rains and occasional thunderstorms. Day long hard rains were few and far between. The summer rains did not refill the streams, lakes, and ponds that were dry from the previous year's drought. Rainfall returned in the fall. Hurricane Gordon passed through the Florida Straits and into the Gulf of Mexico September 17 bringing much needed rain to the southern and west coastal counties. Some groves had 5 - 7 inches of rain. Caretakers stayed very busy trying to dry out the groves. On September 21 and 22, Tropical Storm Helene dumped additional rains on the still wet west coast. A sub-tropical depression the first of October crossed the Florida Straits and traveled up the east coast depositing another 3 - 7 inches along the way. Very little rain fell during November and some growers were irrigating by the end of the month. Temperatures on November 22 were in the low 30s with some readings in the upper 20s for the coldest locations. Generally, all areas remained dry with only a few scattered showers. Freezing temperatures occurred the morning of December 20 in the northern citrus counties. Only tender new leaves were affected with very little wood damaged. Rains finally arrived the last of December to help the trees recover from the cold weather. A large mass of cold air covered virtually all of Florida's citrus belt from the last of December to January 5, 2001. Low ground readings were in the lower 20s with the upper 20s recorded in most areas. Trees were generally in quasi-dormant condition when the freezing temperatures arrived, minimizing the damage caused by thecold. Temperatures during the first 10 days of January remained cold which helped in the salvaging of any damaged fruit. A few scattered rains, along with irrigation applied in most areas, was beneficial for the damaged trees . The citrus belt remained dry through most of February with mild to warm temperatures. Irrigation helped push out new growth and pin head bloom buds. The general dry conditions prevailed until the second week of March when heavy rains fell across the citrus belt. The rain, along with warm temperatures, helped produce an abundance of spring growth and bloom buds and was conducive to good fruit set. The bloom period was generally completed by the first week of April, with only a few groves continuing to bloom into mid-month, making it the first “about normal” bloom cycle in the past three years. The spring and early summer weather was wetter than the past two seasons. Supplemental irrigation between April and May showers maintained good tree condition during the important “new crop” fruit setting period. New crop fruit was fairly well set by the time the summer rains started early in June. June, July and August were very normal summer months except when Tropical Storm Barry dumped a lot of water on most of the citrus belt the first week of August. Abundant rainfall during most of the summer helped refill many lakes and ponds depleted during the prolonged dry spell of the past few years. On September 14, Tropical Storm Gabrielle crossed the state dumping a lot of water on the citrus belt and helped fill many citrus water reservoirs. Growers and caretakers were very busy afterward ditching and pumping out the excessive moisture. October received several scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. Temperatures were generally mild with some cooling nighttime weather. New growth started to slow due to the shorter days and cooler weather. November was quite dry and warm and caretakers began irrigating to maintain good tree and fruit condition. These conditions continued until mid December when the first mild and dry cold front passed through the state. Charted below is the historical average of monthly rainfall which includes data from two stations in each of the citrus producing areas. From there it was carried ever westward by man, to India, to the Mediterranean, and on across the Atlantic. Citrus was brought to the Americas by Columbus. When he landed on November 22, 1493, he brought citrus seeds that were planted on the island of Hispaniola. The first seeds planted on the mainland of the Americas were brought by the expedition of Juan de Grijalva when he landed in Central America between July 12 and July 20, 1518. The exact date of the introduction of citrus trees into Florida is not known, but from a statement made by Pedro Medendez, dated April 2, 1579, it appears that citrus fruits were grown in abundance around St. Augustine at that time. Early settlers in Florida some two centuries later found wild citrus trees scattered over the State. One of the oldest cultivated groves planted in Florida (Hume, 1926, p. 95) is thought to have been the Don Phillipe grove in Pinellas County, planted sometime between the years of 1809 and 1820. Nearly 1.5 million boxes were shipped in 1887-88, the first season on record. Citrus production in Florida had reached an all time high of more than 5 million boxes when the Great Freeze of 1894-95 almost totally wiped out the citrus industry. It was not until 1909-10 that this level was reached again. In the 2000-01 season, Florida produced 278.8 million boxes representing 76 percent of the Nation's citrus production. [ 2000-01 Orange Bearing Acreage ] [ 2000-01 Grapefruit Bearing Acreage ] [ 2000-01 Total Bearing Acreage ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Boxes of Fruit Per Tree The Florida Agricultural Statistics Service conducts objective surveys to determine fruit per tree, average sizes, and droppage between August and maturity. These data are used to estimate production per tree for each of four types of citrus fruit, as shown in the following tables. The estimates of production per tree are based on official end-of-season production estimates and the number of bearing trees indicated by the citrus tree inventory surveys. The averagesof boxes per tree for age groups shown are calculated from estimates of fruit per tree in August, size at maturity, and drop between August and maturity. Additionally, the boxes are subdivided by production areas. Estimated boxes by types and age groups are weighted averages of the indicated seasons. Small sample sizes in some age/area cells and rounding may contribute to inconsistent averages.
