The Florida Agricultural Statistics Service, in
cooperation with the Florida Lime and Avocado
Administrative Committees, has completed an inventory
of the State's tropical fruit acreage as of October 2000.
Virtually all of the acreage is located in south Miami-
Dade County with the remainder found in a number of
adjacent southern counties.
Florida's avocado acreage is down 2.5 percent from
6,447 acres reported in 1996 to 6,288 acres in 2000.
Miami-Dade County's acreage declined a little more than
1 percent from 6,305 acres in 1996 to 6,227 acres in
2000. There have been only 302 acres planted in Miami-
Dade County in the four years since the 1996 survey.
There has been a decline in the older avocado acreage
due to normal attrition and general urbanization. There
have been some new avocado groves planted on recently
pushed lime acreage. Also, resets are being planted where
undesirable varieties have been removed.
There is a 63 percent reduction in Florida's lime
acreage since 1996 and most of this loss is because of the
presence of citrus canker in Miami-Dade County. There
were 3,168 acres of limes in 1996 and currently there are
1,171 acres. Statewide, there have been only 14 acres of
limes planted since 1996. In 1996 there were 376 acres of
limes located outside of Miami-Dade County. Currently
there are only 20 acres of limes located in other areas of
the state. In the near future, these small groves may be
pushed out or abandoned because of their susceptibility
to canker and for economic reasons.
Mango acreage has declined over 8 percent since
1996 when there were 1,833 acres. As of October 2000,
there are 1,675 acres remaining in Florida. Miami-Dade
County has 1,398 acres while the other areas have 277
acres. There have been only 26 acres of Mangos planted
since 1996 in all counties.
LEMONS ALSO DECLINE
Lemon acreage, located mostly in Hendry County,
declined slightly over the past four years. In 1996 there
were 1,033 acres, and now there are 979 acres. There
have been only 69 acres planted in the past four years and
virtually all of those trees were resets in existing older
lemon groves.
