The Economic Research Service, USDA, reports that
receipts from Florida agricultural products in 2001 amounted
to $6.42 billion. This is a 5.3 percent decrease from the
previous year, when cash receipts totaled $6.78 billion. Cash
receipts from all crops decreased 8.2 percent from 2000, and
cash receipts from all livestock and livestock products
increased by 6.0 percent.
Receipts from all crops accounted for 77.3 percent of all
cash receipts. As in previous years, the leading crop commodities were oranges (12.2 percent of all cash receipts), foliage
and floriculture (11.9 percent), tomatoes (7.8 percent), and
sugarcane (7.5 percent). The leading livestock commodities
were milk (6.7 percent of all cash receipts), cattle and calves
(5.6 percent), and broilers (3.9 percent).
CITRUS
Cash receipts from citrus crops amounted to $1.07 billion
dollars, a decrease of 31.9 percent from 2000. Sales of citruscommodities accounted for 16.6 percent of all sales in Florida.
(Receipts for citrus are on a delivered in basis without
discounting picking and hauling costs.)
Sales of grapefruit were down from $288 million in 2000
to $202 million in 2001. Sales from oranges ($781 million)
also decreased significantly from the previous year.
VEGETABLES AND MELONS
Cash receipts from vegetable and melon crops amounted
to $1.4 million in 2001, unchanged from 2000, and accounted
for 22.4 percent of the total cash receipts. Peppers and
cucumbers decreased from a year earlier, and potatoes, snap
beans, and sweet corn increased. Receipts of tomatoes, at
$500 million, accounted for 35 percent of all vegetable and
melon receipts and 7.8 percent of all cash receipts.
FIELD CROPS
Receipts for field crops amounted to $626.1 million, up
4.8 percent from last year. Sugarcane, at $484.1 million,
increased 8.1 percent from 2000 and accounted for 77 percent
of the field crop receipts and 7.5 percent of all cash receipts.
Cotton receipts of $40.1 million were up significantly from
the previous year. Receipts for soybeans and tobacco decreased.
LIVESTOCK
Total cash receipts from livestock and livestock products were $1.46 billion, up 6 percent from the previous year and account for 22.7 percent of all cash receipts. Milk receipts account for 29 percent of the receipts in this category, followed by cattle and calves (25 percent) and broilers (17 percent).
