FOLIAGE PLANTS Florida leads the Nation in gross wholesale sales of potted foliage for indoor use and foliage hanging baskets with sales of $361.2 million during 2001, up four percent or $14.2 million from the $346.9 million sold in 2000. Potted foliage sales accounted for $333.7 million of the 2001 total while the sales of foliage hanging baskets totaled $27.4 million. During 2000 potted foliage sales totaled almost $319.7 million while sales of hanging baskets totaled $27.2 million. Florida's 408 commercial foliage growers used over 189.9 million square feet to produce foliage during 2001, up almost five percent from the comparable 2000 area of 181.5 million square feet. The 103 firms whose sales of foliage totaled a million dollars or more in 2001 accounted for nearly 73 percent of all sales or nearly $262.9 million. During 2000, 92 growers with foliage sales of a million or more accounted for over 68 percent of all foliage sales. Producers in the million dollar sales or more category used 125.5 million square feet to produce potted foliage in 2001 compared with 115.8 million square feet the previous year. Foliage gross sales in the southeast, which includes the counties of Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach, totaled $213.7 million during 2001 which represents about 59 percent of all 2001 foliage sales. Southeastern growers used over 146.4 million square feet to produce the 2001 potted foliage crop, up six percent from the previous year. The Apopka area, which includes the counties of Lake, Orange, and Seminole, sold foliage worth $125.6 million during 2001 which is about 35 percent of all 2001 foliage sales. Apopka producers used over 28.0 million square feet, up five percent from the previous year. Florida sales of all cut greens during 2001 totaled over $87.4 million, nearly 79 percent of the value for all cut greens sold in the 36 States. The 2001 value fell 13 percent below the 2000 value of $100.6 million. Leatherleaf ferns represented $52.5 million of the 2001 total versus $64.3 million in 2000. Growers received an average price of87 cents per bunch for the 60.3 million bunches sold in 2001. Florida sales of other cut greens totaled $34.9 million, down four percent from the $36.3 million producers received for other cut greens sold in 2000. Pierson, Florida is the heart of the “Fern Capital of the World”. Growers there and in the surrounding areas of North Central Florida grow a wide variety of ferns and other greens.
