FOLIAGE PLANTS

Florida again led the Nation in net wholesale sales of potted foliage and foliage hanging baskets with sales of $330.4 million during 1997 compared with the 1996 revised sales of $329.6 million. Potted foliage sales accounted for $308.8 million of the 1997 total, $3.3 million or one percent above the 1996 sales of $305.5 million. The sales of foliage hanging baskets totaled $21.6 million, $2.5 million or eleven percent below the previous year. Florida's 423 commercial growers used almost 166.4 million square feet to produce foliage, up almost four percent from the 1996 area of 160.1 million feet. Eighty firms, each with foliage sales of a million dollars or more, accounted for 67 percent of all sales, compared to 74 percent (from 69 firms) in 1996.

Foliage sales in the southeast, which includes the counties of Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach, decreased about two percent from the 1996 sales of $178.8 million to $175.8 million during 1997 which represents about 53 percent of all 1997 foliage sales. Southeastern growers used almost 123.9 million square feet to produce the 1997 foliage crop, up a half percent from the previous year. The Apopka area, which includes the counties of Lake, Orange, and Seminole, sold $124.1 million worth of foliage during 1997 which is almost 38 percent of all 1997 foliage sales, over two percent more than the 1996 sales of $121.3 million. Apopka producers used almost 24.8 million square feet, almost three percent higher than the 24.2 million square feet used in 1996.

1/ Square footage utilized for producing both hanging baskets and potted foliage was counted only once. However, for those firms having some area exclusively for hanging baskets, the questionnaire design did not have sufficient detail to pick up this portion of the hanging basket area.
2/ Net value is gross wholesale value less cost of plant material purchased from others for growing on.
3/ Includes Lake, Orange, and Seminole counties.
4/ Includes Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach counties.
5/ This group includes firms that had over $100,000 in value of total sales from all nursery products included in the survey but had net sales of less than $100,000 for foliage plants.

CUT CULTIVATED GREENS: Florida continues as the Nation's leader in sales of cut cultivated greens among the 36 States surveyed. Florida sales of all cut greens totaled $85.5 million, over 81 percent of the value for all cut greens sold in the 36 States surveyed. The 1997 value decreased almost 12 percent from the 1996 value of $96.7 million. Leatherleaf ferns represented $56.6 million of the 1997 total with an average price of 81 cents for the 69.9 million bunches sold. Florida sales of other cut greens totaled almost $29.0 million, down eleven percent from the sales during the previous year.
Florida growers used 7,382 acres for the 1997 crop, down over one percent from the 7,480 acres used for the 1996 crop. The majority of this acreage is located in the counties of Volusia, Putnam, and Lake. Acreage used for leatherleaf ferns totaled 4,270 acres with the value per acre averaging $13,254, down about $540 dollars per acre or four percent from the 1996 average of $13,794 per acre. Florida growers intend to use 7,488 acres during 1998 to produce all cut cultivated greens, including leatherleaf ferns.
