All cattle and calves on Florida farms and ranches as of January 1, 2002 including dairy cattle, totaled 1,780,000 head, down 20,000 head from 2001. Beef cows in Florida were 958,000 head, down from 975,000 in 2001. Florida ranked 12th in beef cows nationally and third among States east of the Mississippi River.
  Calves born during 2001 totaled 940,000, down 10,000 head from 2000. Calves marketed from Florida in 2001 were 687,000 head. Almost 75 percent of the calf crop of Florida was marketed, the largest percentage of calves of all States.
