POULTRY HIGHLIGHTS

FLORIDA

  The total value of Florida chicken and egg production in 2001 was $376 million, up from $335 million in 2000. Egg production was valued at $122 million, up from 2000. The average annual price for eggs (hatching and table eggs combined) was 53.6 cents per dozen, up from 47.8 cents per dozen in 2000.

  The value of broilers produced in Florida during 2001 totaled $254 million, up from $227 million of a year earlier. The average annual price of broilers in 2001 was 40.0 cents per pound, an increase from 35.0 cents per pound in 2000.

  The value of sales from Other Chickens was $233,000. This includes sales of spent hens and roosters.

  Hens and pullets of laying age on farms on December 1, 2001, were 10.8 million birds, of which 6.4 million were 1 year and older. This compares to 10.7 million and 5.3 million birds, respectively, in 2000. Pullets not yet of laying age numbered 2.2 million, up from 2.0 million pullets in 2000.

  Florida broiler production in 2001 totaled 634.2 million pounds, down slightly from 2000. Broilers raised in Florida during 2001 totaled 115.3 million birds, down from 119.9 million birds in 2000.

  Florida egg production, in the production year of December 1, 2000 to November 30, 2001, was 2,737 million eggs. This was an increase from the previous year's production of 2,716 million eggs.

  Commercial hatcheries produced 114.4 million straight run chicks in 2001, down from 124.4 million in 2000. Broiler- type chicks accounted for 103.6 million chicks, and egg-type chicks were 10.8 million.


UNITED STATES

  Layer numbers during 2001 averaged 335 million, up two percent from the year earlier.

  The combined value of production from broilers, eggs, turkeys and the value of sales from chickens in 2001, was $24.0 billion, up from the $21.2 billion in 2000. Of the combined total, 70 percent was from broilers, 18 percent from eggs, 11 percent from turkeys, and less than one percent from other chickens.

  Value of egg production in 2001 was $4.44 billion, up from $4.35 billion in 2000. Egg production totaled 85.7 billion eggs, up two percent from 2000. Table egg production at 72.8 billion eggs, increased from 71.4 in 2000. Hatching egg production was 12.9 billion eggs, a slight decrease from 2000. The value of broilers produced during 2001 was $16.7 billion, up from 2000. The total number of broilers produced in 2001 was 8.39 billion, up one percent from 2000. The total amount of live weight broilers produced in 2001 was 42.4 billion pounds, up two percent from 2000.

  The value of turkeys produced during 2001 was $2.79 billion, down only one percent from the $2.82 billion the previous year. Turkey production in 2001 was 7.15 billion pounds live weight, compared with 6.94 billion pounds in 2000.

  The value of sales from other chickens (excluding broilers) in 2001was $46.0 million, down 28 percent from a year ago.
