Georgia office of USDA-NASS

About Us

The Georgia Field Office, located in Athens , is one of 45 field offices of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). NASS, headquartered in Washington , DC , is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency's responsibility is to prepare official estimates of agriculture for the nation and for each state.

NASS field offices collect, verify and analyze data which are used to prepare statistical estimates. The data are collected voluntarily from farmers and agribusinesses throughout the year. Survey data are collected and summarized at the state level to provide statistical indications. These indications are analyzed by statisticians in each field office who then make recommendations to the national headquarters in Washington, DC . Statisticians in headquarters review all recommendations and issue state and national estimates to the public on scheduled dates throughout the year. There are approximately 300 national and 9,000 state reports issued annually, nationwide.

The Georgia Field Office works cooperatively with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the University of Georgia 's Cooperative Extension Service, and Agri-Industry representatives to provide the best possible statistical data for Georgia agriculture. This cooperation permits the preparation and publication of county-level estimates of crops, livestock, poultry, fruits, nuts and many other commodities unique to Georgia . In addition, we conduct surveys for other government agencies and private organizations. Click to see a summary of the coverage and frequency of estimates released by our office.
