ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 8, 2006 Issue GA-CW0106 Agricultural Summary January 8, 2006 WARM BEGINNING TO THE NEW YEAR Unseasonably warm weather characterized the first full week of 2006, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average temperatures rose to the low 50's across the state. Rainfall was scattered, with most areas receiving less than an inch of precipitation. Overall, soil moisture conditions were rated 6 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus. The recent weather extremes continued to contribute to the declining condition of pastures. The large swings in temperature and precipitation have limited the pastures' ability to combat diseases. In some areas, the soil was still too wet for any type of planting or field work. Hay feeding to livestock continued it's increase. The recent rains improved the wheat and rye crops, and small grains as a whole continued to improve. The onion harvest continued. Tobacco growers prepared beds for planting. Other activities included mowing cotton stalks and the routine care of livestock and poultry. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Crop Progress Table January 8, 2006 Data for this table will resume April 2006. DISTRICT COMMENTS January 8, 2006 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Severe weather early in the week. Some wind damage and hail. Small grain conditions continued to improve. Pasture conditions continued to decline and hay feeding for livestock continued to increase. We've been receiving an unusual amount of unseasonable weather recently. The tornadoes hail, and heavy rains have not resulted in major damage in our county fortunately. Soils are too wet for field work and/or planting. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Good rains helped wheat and rye cover crops/grazing. Wheat acres reduced due to weak price. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Overall, wheat and livestock in good condition. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Getting tobacco beds ready to plant. Some rye fields not growing to well, not sure yet what is the total problem. Growers attended educational meetings. Mowed cotton stalks. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Currently harvesting salad onions. Onion acreage 90% set. Find agricultural statistics for your county, State, and the Nation at www.usda.gov/nass/.
