ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 15, 2006 Issue GA-CW0206 Agricultural Summary January 15, 2006 WARM WEATHER CONTINUES Temperatures remained unseasonably high during mid-January, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average temperatures statewide hovered around the low to mid 50's. Rainfall was limited, as only a few areas received over an inch of precipitation. Overall, soil moisture conditions were rated 5 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 13 percent surplus. The high temperatures were both harmful and beneficial to Georgia farmers. Pasture conditions did not improve, as the warm weather encouraged insect activity and the spread of disease. Conversely, the high temperatures helped growers of winter crops, as the small grains crops continued to improve. Supplemental livestock feeding continued, with cotton seed and peanut hay being used where available. Other activities included commercial garden pea planting, onion planting, and the routine care of livestock and poultry. Cotton farmers continued mowing and discing cotton stalks. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Crop Progress Table January 15, 2006 Data for this table will resume April 2006. DISTRICT COMMENTS January 15, 2006 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Warm temperatures. Helping winter grazing. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Half of an inch of rain and unseasonably warm weather. Small grains and winter grazing are looking better. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Much warmer than normal temperatures early in the week. Cold, rainy, and windy later in the week. Small grain conditions continue to improve due to good soil moisture. Pasture conditions continue to decline and hay feeding for livestock continued to increase. It has been unusually warm for January. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Scattered showers brought little rain. With warmer than normal temperatures and low rain fall, we are starting the year out drier than normal. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Soil sampling of row crop fields. Cotton stalk mowing and discing. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Rye planted for grazing and cover crops is growing slowly due to wet cool weather. Cattle farmers feeding cotton seed and peanut hay if possible. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Corn is not growing. Commercial garden peas being planted and onion setting being finished up.
