ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 22, 2006 Issue GA-CW0306 Agricultural Summary January 22, 2006 WARM AND WET... AGAIN Unseasonably warm and wet weather continued into the second half of January, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average temperatures statewide remained in the low 50's, while most areas of the state received at least one day of measurable precipitation. Overall, soil moisture conditions were rated 3 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus. Pasture conditions continued to deteriorate, due to the recent weather conditions. County Agents reported a decline in conditions from last week, especially in the western part of the state. Small grain crops, however, continued to improve despite the soggy field conditions. Onions responded well to the warm weather, and continued to grow. Cabbage growers began preparation for transplanting. Cabbage transplanting is expected to begin in early February. Other activities included planning for 2006 activities and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork.
