ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date February 5, 2006 Issue GA-CW0506 Agricultural Summary February 5, 2006 RAINS DURING THE WEEK The warmer and wetter than normal weather continued through the first week of February until the weekend when more normal temperatures occurred, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Overall, soil moisture conditions were rated 1 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 28 percent surplus. Wet field conditions, in some areas of the state, limited work in the fields. Mud in the pastures has become a problem at many dairy and beef cattle farms. Small grain conditions are good. Growers started fertilizing small grains and winter grazing. Frost and freeze protection was applied to highbush blueberries. Heavy hay feeding continues for livestock. Other activities included harrowing fields, preparation for spring vegetable crops, soil testing and lime application, spreading litter on cropland, the completion of vineyard pruning, and the routine care of livestock and poultry. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Crop Progress Table February 5, 2006 Data for this table will resume April 2006.
