ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date October 1, 2006 Issue GA-CW3806 Agricultural Summary October 1, 2006 COOLER TEMPERATURES BUT NO RAIN The State experienced cooler temperatures and very little rain this week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia field office. Most stations reported rainfall totals near one tenth of an inch. Daytime temperatures peaked in the low 80's. Lows ranged from the mid 40's to near 60 degrees overnight. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 11% very short, 41% short, 46% adequate, and 2% surplus. There have been mixed reports about the effect of late season rain on crop conditions. Some producers claim the rains have improved crop and hayfield conditions. Others say the showers have not been sufficient and qualtiy of soybeans, peanuts, pecans, and cotton has declined. After just one week of light rain, some counties reported the return dry conditions. Lack of rain prevented planting of ryeseed, winter pastures, and other small grains. Producers were baling peanut hay to cover the low hay stocks. The weather has been good for harvesting cotton and peanuts. There were still reports of armyworms and white grubs in pastures and hayfieilds. Some hayfield infestations continue to be severe. Hay supplies remain short. Other activities included planting small grains, harvesting pumpkins, corn, and sorghum, and routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork. District Highlights These comments are written by the Georgia County Extension Agents, and have been compiled and edited by the National Agricultural Statistics Service. DISTRICT COMMENTS - Week 39 October 1, 2006 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Seeing some armyworms and white grubs in hayfields and pastures. 4 to 5 inches of rain since last Friday has helped a lot. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Pumpkin harvest underway. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Getting DRY AGAIN!!!! Need rain badly. Army worms still causing problems in pastures and hayfields. Severe devistation from them in some hayfields. Corn and grain sorghum harvest continues and fall planting of small grains and winter grazing getting started. Dry period has kept producers from planting or overseeding ryegrass. We have seen a turnaround in many of our pastures in Hancock county. The late rains have helped us tremendously and we have an upturn in hay production. Fall armyworms have been active recently, however we've been able to keep everything under control. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Extremely dry-we've missed all the Sept. rain opportunities, peanuts digging hard, much peanut hay will be baled to meet demand caused by drought reduced hay crops, but lack of grass hay grown during drought. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST .05" rainfall, Peanut harvesting this week. Sampling showing 2-3 week digging on GA Green. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Peanut maturity slowing down with cooler nights and dry conditions. Very dry soil conditions have slowed fall grain and winter grazing plantings. Dry conditions have hurt soybeans, peanuts, pecans and cotton from filling out. Will reduce final yield and quality of crop. Some areas have not had any measurable rainfall in 5 to 6 weeks. Almost perfect harvest weather conditions for cotton and peanuts. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Dry, Dry, Dry. We are in much need of rain.
