ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 5, 2006 Issue GA-CW4406 Agricultural Summary November 5, 2006 COLDER, DRIER CONDITIONS Colder temperatures and drier conditions aided in cotton harvest this week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Highs for the beginning of the week averaged in the mid to upper 70's, but fell into the mid 60's for the weekend following Wednesday's cold front. Nighttime lows dipped into the 20's in some areas. Average low for the week was near 40. Some stations reported a trace of rain on Tuesday. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 10% very short, 29% short, 58% adequate, and 3% surplus. The week's dry conditions were ideal for harvesting cotton. The cotton yield has been better than expected. Cooler temperatures delayed peanut digging and combining. Peanut harvest was 79% complete, although many of the late planted varieties still remain in the field. As the cotton and peanut harvests near completion, growers are expected to begin planting winter wheat. Last Friday's rain left some fields too wet to continue planting winter pastures this week. However, the rain did improve crop conditions for small grains and allowed livestock to graze. Many livestock producers have begun feeding winter hay. Other activities included harvesting apples, transplanting onions, and routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT COMMENTS November 5, 2006 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Apple harvest concluded this week as well as planting winter grazing. Rain this week kept field conditions too wet for additional planting- major activity is routine care of livestock and poultry. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Very dry and cold! Pasture conditions continue to decline. Hay feeding to cattle beginning by some producers. Pond and stream levels continue to decrease. Small grain and winter grazing planting continues. Both needing rain really bad. We have experienced cooler temperatures. We haven't had much rainfall during this time. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Cotton picking very well. Too dry for winter pasture. Wheat planting will begin soon as we enter last 2 weeks of cotton/peanut harvest - growers will be planting between picking cotton. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Peanut harvest at 50%. Most late varieties remain in field. Cool temperatures delayed digging and combining. Cotton better than expected. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Onion transplanting to begin in full swing this week. Some rain last weekend has helped small grains and allowed for continued grazing.
