ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 12, 2006 Issue GA-CW4506 Agricultural Summary November 12, 2006 WEATHER CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO FLUCTUATE The story this week was fluctuating weather conditions, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. We began the week with sunshine and highs in the mid 60's, lows near 50. Rain moved across the state on Tuesday, dropping as much as one inch in some areas. Temperatures rose into the mid to upper 70's for the rest of the work week, but fell back into the 60's for the weekend. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 8% very short, 25% short, 64% adequate, and 3% surplus. Producers were thankful for the rain on Tuesday, but many are still hoping for more. Some complain that the rains have increased insect presence. Last weekend, frost took its toll on unharvested cotton. Cotton growers are completing harvest and losing hope of finishing the top crop. Livestock producers have begun feeding winter hay. Many are bracing for a difficult winter feeding period with poor grazing conditions and short supplies of hay. Other activities included routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT COMMENTS November 12, 2006 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Routine care of livestock and poultry. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Got some badly need rain, but need more! We have gotten quite a bit of rainfall over the past 48 hours. We are anticipating a warm-up today and tomorrow. It doesn't help us with our insect problems. Beneficial rains fell earlier this week. However, livestock producers are still bracing for a difficult winter feeding period with short supplies of hay and grazing. Hay is done in the county. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 0.31" of rainfall. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL One inch of rain during the reporting period. We are still looking for a significant rain event. Frost hit remaining cotton hard last Saturday, winding up any hope of finishing the top crop. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
