CROP PROGRESS & CONDITION REPORT USDA, NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS SERVICE Georgia Field Office 355 East Hancock Avenue, Athens, GA 30601 Media Contact: Douglas G. Kleweno 706-546-2236 nass-ga@nass.usda.gov ga-crop-weather November 20, 2006 COLD FRONT BRINGS RAIN AND COLDER TEMPERATURES A cold front moved through the State on Wednesday, bringing significant rainfall, colder temperatures, and improved soil moisture conditions, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. The week began with sunshine and highs near 70. A cold front moved across the state on Wednesday, dropping more than three inches of rain in many areas. High temperatures fell into the 50's for the remainder of the week. Average lows varied throughout the week, ranging from the lower 30's to near 50. While rainfall totals were significant, the State remains behind on total rainfall. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 3% very short, 14% short, 69% adequate, and 14% surplus. For many, the rainfall and cooler temperatures have been a relief. Producers continued planting small grains and winter grazing. With improved soil moisture conditions, many agents expect planting to finish soon. The rainfall helped fall vegetables, emerging wheat, and other small grains. The low temperatures, however, were not good for winter grazing. Killing frosts have finished pastures in some areas. Short hay supplies and lack of grazing have been a major stress for livestock producers this fall. Many have been feeding winter hay. Most are bracing for a difficult winter feeding period. The cotton and peanut harvests were nearing completion. Cotton producers were mowing cotton stalks and harrowing fields this week. Peanut producers need drier conditions to complete digging and harvesting. Other activities included transplanting onions and routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT COMMENTS - Week 46 November 19, 2006 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST It has been a very wet week with more than 4" of rain. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL 2-3 inches of rain countywide. Some peanuts still in the ground, digging and harvesting has slowed to standstill, waiting for dryer conditions. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Finally got some GOOD RAIN, 2-3 inches in most areas of the county. Hay feeding beginning for many livestock producers due to extremely poor pasture conditions. Small grain and winter grazing planting continues. Probably will be finishing up soon, now that we have some moisture. We have gotten a reprieve of sorts in terms of rainfall and cooler temperatures. Most of our winter planting has gone on as planned. Abundant rains fell Wednesday evening helping relieve soil moisture. However, low temperatures hamper winter grazing. Short hay supplies and no grazing are a major stress on livestock producers this Fall. We've had killing frosts so our pastures are done. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Big rain has dampened things temporarily, but we are still behind on total rainfall. Cotton mostly in and quality running good. Small grain planting was halted by rain and cold weather but will resume and be finished soon. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Some cotton left to pick and a few peanuts. Received much needed rainfall for small grains and fall veggies. Got 1.7 inches of rain. Mowing cotton stalks and harrowing fields. Received 1.7 inches of rain during the week. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Onion transplanting in full swing. Recent rains last week were perfect for emerging wheat.
