ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date December 4, 2006 Issue GA-CW4806 Agricultural Summary December 4, 2006 UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES The State experienced unseasonably warm weather during the week, but cooler temperatures moved in over the weekend, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. During the week, highs averaged in the low to mid 70's with lows in the mid 50's. After the arrival of cooler air, weekend highs stayed near 50 with lows in the upper 30's and low 40's. Rain was reported across the State on Thursday and Friday. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 7% very short, 18% short, 71% adequate, and 4% surplus. Pond and stream levels remain low. A significant amount of rainfall will be needed to replenish them. Many farmers hope the week's warmer weather and showers will rejuvenate fescue pastures and help winter rye, wheat, and oats. Planting of small grains and winter grazing was nearly complete. Hay supplies remain short. Producers continued supplemental feeding of hay, cotton seed, and gin trash to cattle. Heavy dew, showers, and morning mist has set beack the completion of the cotton harvest. For cotton that has been harvested, quality has been good. Other activities include applying fertilizer and poultry litter to small grains, mowing cotton stalks, equipment maintenance, and some land clearing work. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Unseasonably warm weather early in the week combined with some good showers will hopefully perk-up fescue pastures and help winter grazing, such as rye, wheat, oats. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Some light rain in parts of the county. Warmer than average temperatures. Small grain and wintergrazing planting nearing completion. Pond and stream levels remain really low. We have had our share of unseasonable warm weather. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Some grain planted late but most of our winter pasture looks very good. Wheat still being planted and emerging. Hay supplies short. Cotton quality very good. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 0.3" of rainfall. Cotton harvest slowed due to rainfall. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Soil moisture is fair but ponds are low and creeks and streams are dry. We need a great deal of rain to replenish them. Heavy dew and light mist is causing problems in final cotton harvest. Small grains need moisture. Applying fertilizer and poultry litter to small grains. Feeding hay, cotton seed and gin trash to cattle. Mowing cotton stalks and equipment maintenance and some land clearing work. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
