ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 8, 2007 Issue GA-CW0107 Agricultural Summary January 8, 2007 WARM AND WET WEATHER THIS WEEK The State experienced wet weather the first and last part of this week along with warmer than normal temperatures, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average highs rose into the upper 60's and low 70's at the end of the week with slightly cooler weather at the beginning of the week. Lows were in the 30's and 40's early in the week, but had moved into the 50's by Thursday. Rainfall was reported across the State with substantial rain coming on Friday and Sunday. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 4% short, 72% adequate, and 24% surplus. Small grains showed improvement with the warm, rainy weather and looked much better than they did in December. Growers sprayed for winter weeds and Italian ryegrass. Heavy hay feeding to livestock continued this week though hay supplies are getting short for some producers. The recent rain has improved soil moisture and higher temperatures have caused many trees and plants to bloom leaving some worried about the effects of a cold snap. Major activities included routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 3.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Heavy hay feeding to livestock continues. Hay supplies getting short for some producers. We have been experiencing more than our share of unseasonably warm weather. Received about 2+ inches of much needed rain over the weekend--crops & pastures are still behind due to no rain for almost two months Nov. and Dec. Rain is a welcome sight. Amounts vary around the county but overall everyone got some. Small grains have taken a big jump with the rain. Looking much better than they did in December.
