ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 21, 2007 Issue GA-CW0307 Agricultural Summary January 22, 2007 WINTER WEATHER ARRIVES After many weeks of warmer than normal temperatures, winter weather finally arrived in the State, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average highs were in the 40's and 50's most of the week with average lows in the 30's. Scattered showers occurred throughout the State including freezing rains in some northern areas on Wednesday and Thursday. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 3% short, 76% adequate, and 21% surplus. Small grains continued to thrive in the State. Growth was about two weeks ahead of schedule resulting in a shorter window to spray weeds and causing some producers to delay top-dressing as long as possible. Hay feeding to livestock continued to make up for a lack of winter grazing. Other activities included planting blueberries, seeding tobacco for transplants, appying lime to pastures and hayfields, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork.
