ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date February 4, 2007 Issue GA-CW0507 Agricultural Summary February 5, 2007 STILL COLD AND WINDY The cold and windy weather from last week continued into this week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Lows were in the 20's most of the week; average highs were in the 40's and lower 50's. On Thursday, there was heavy precipitation throughout the state, coming in the form of snow and ice in northern areas. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 1% short, 64% adequate, and 35% surplus. The cold, damp weather curtailed field activity this week. Wet fields hampered lime application as well as the application of nitrogen to small grains. Some producers did try to top-dress small grains between rains. There was some frost and freeze damage to highbush blueberries. The blueberry crop continues to be in great jeopardy of being lost to cold weather. The rains over the past month have improved surface water levels. Most ponds are back up to their pre-summer levels. Other activities included mending fences, controlled burning of forestry land, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 3.7 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Received 4-6 inches of snow 2/1/07. Received snow and ice across much of the county this week. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Snow and ice this week throughout the county. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Cold spell continues. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Cold and windy! Heavy rains late in the week. Heavy hay feeding continues for livestock with hay getting in really short supply! Small grains continue to look really good. Some producers trying to get small grains topdressed between rains. We have had our share of cold weather as of late. The rainfall is welcomed and should push our deficit downwards. Small grains have declined this past week due to cold, cloudy, and wet. The rains over the past month have improved surface water levels. Most ponds are recharged and back up to their pre-summer levels. Wet fields kept farmers from spraying and topdressing some fields this week. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Staying very wet, beginning to "push" farmers that want to spray/fertilize wheat and spread lime. Soil conditions remain wet, as this has hampered the application of nitrogen on wheat. Rain on Thursday. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Excess wheat growth. Cold weather preventing field activity. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Wet. Got about 2.5" of rainfall. Control burning forestry land. Feeding cattle supplemental feed and fixing fence. Some frost and freeze damage to Highbush blueberries due to cold weather, we are still estimating the amount of damage. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Cold weather persists. Blueberry crop in great jeopardy of being lost to cold weather.
