ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date February 26, 2007 Issue GA-CW0107 Agricultural Summary February 26, 2007 WARMER TEMPERATURES The State experienced cool temperatures at the beginning of the week, but warmer weather returned by the weekend, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. The week began with average high temperatures near the mid 50's and the lows in upper 30's. By the weekend, temperatures were more near normal to slightly above normal. Early Sunday morning a weather front brought welcome rains to the State. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 7% short, 81% adequate, and 12% surplus. Winter wheat was reacting well to earlier applied fertilizer with good growth. Small grains were generally doing very well. Growers were active in applying nitrogen to wheat and fescue pastures. Hay feeding to livestock was very active. Growers performed field work in preparation for spring crops. Other activities included pruning in commercial vineyards, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Warmer weather this week - routine care of livestock and poultry and pruning in commercial vineyards are major activities. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Warmer; parts of the county could use some rain. Lime applications; nitrogen application to winter wheat; fertilizer on winter grazing and fescue pastures. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Warmer, sunny weather late in the week. Small grains continue to look good. Heavy hay feeding to livestock continues and hay supplies of some producers are almost exhausted. We have been fortunate to have received rainfall every week. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Cold weather, especially at night, has wheat looking somewhat "tough". Where top-dress has been out long enough to make a difference, it's greening and growing. Not in joint stage yet. Late planted will have to hurry to catch up. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Field preparation (liming, discing) for spring planting. Nitrogen side dress for wheat continues. Wheat reacting to earlier nitrogen applications.
