ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date March 11, 2007 Issue GA-CW1007 Agricultural Summary March 12, 2007 CORN PLANTING UNDER WAY The weather was warm and dry for the first full week of March, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. The State experienced an average low temperature in the low 40's and an average high in the low 70's. Most of the state did not receive any rainfall this week. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 1% very short, 17% short, 73% adequate, and 9% surplus. Fields were drying out from the heavy rains of last week. There was minimal agricultural damage reported as a result of the tornados and heavy winds on March 1. Some pecan trees were uprooted and minor structural damage occurred. Corn planting was just getting under way this week in the southern part of the state. Small grains continued to look good. Hay supplies declined as livestock continued on supplemental feeding. Other activities included preparing land for spring crops, burning off pastures, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork.
