ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date March 18, 2007 Issue GA-CW1107 Agricultural Summary March 19, 2007 SMALL GRAINS STILL THRIVING The State enjoyed warm, spring-like weather to start off the week until a cold front moved through late Thursday night, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average highs were in the 70's and average lows were in the 40's and 50's before cold temperatures returned on Friday. Light rain fell throughout the State late Thursday into Friday morning. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 2% very short, 30% short, 62% adequate, and 6% surplus. Small grains continued to progress nicely. Wheat experienced greenup from nitrogen applications. Some incidence of soil borne mosiac virus in wheat due to cold, damp soils was reported. Corn planting was under way in the central and southern regions of the State. Lime and fertilizer were applied to cotton fields, pastures, and hay fields. Sweet corn was also being fertilized. Many counties reported dry conditions and a need for more rainfall to alleviate the subsoil moisture deficit. Other activities included preparing land for tobacco crops, clipping tobacco plants in greenhouses for transplant, pasture weed control, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Some light rain late in the week. Heavy hay feeding to livestock continues. Hope pasture conditions start to improve soon! Corn planting beginning. We have had excellent weather conditions over the past week. We received 1/2 inch of rain. Corn planting continues. Wheat - small grains progressing nicely. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL A little rain should keep corn planting on schedule. Winter pasture fading due to early warm weather. Lime and fertilizer being put out for cotton. Cool temperatures have slowed things. Need rain! DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Hay supply is short. Livestock in good condition. Wheat green-up from nitrogen application. Corn planting began this week. Crop will go into the ground quickly. Wheat continues to look good. Pastures holding up good. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Planting corn, preparing tobacco dirt. Clipping tobacco plants in greenhouse. Sweet corn up. Applying lime and fertilizer and herbicides. We are very short on subsoil moisture. We are 10 inches short on rain fall for 2007. It will be hard to plant row crops with this shortage of moisture. Drier conditions prevail. Some scattered showers occurred; however, windy conditions are causing drier conditions.
