ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 2, 2007 Issue GA-CW2607 Agricultural Summary July 2, 2007 CONTINUED HOT While many farmers still need rain, weekend showers brought some relief to the drought conditions, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average highs were in the high 80's to the mid-90's; lows were in the 60's. The northeast part of the State also received showers during the week. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated at 31% very short, 38% short, 31% adequate, and 0% surplus. Weekend rains have helped crop conditions remain stable, and improved in some areas. Cattle were moving to market much earlier than normal. Forage crops have greened up some. Crop development has been slowed by the dry conditions. Disease problems have been reported in some vegetable crops. There were reports of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus in tobacco, and weed pressure was high in many fields. Soybean planting continued. Other activities included cutting hay, feeding hay to cattle, applying sucker control and insecticides to tobacco, applying herbicides to peanuts and cotton, applying poultry litter to pastures, and spraying pastures for weeds. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT COMMENTS July 1, 2007 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST We received area wide rain last week and scattered showers this week. Pastures are returning green. A lot of summer annuals have been planted. Irrigated field crops look good but non-irrigated field crops still look very poor. Some never emerged but maybe with recent rains they will. Outlook for rains this weekend look good. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Thunderstorms this week improved soil moisture in areas of the county. The overall situation is still very dry. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No rain this week. Much needed rainfall fell county wide towards the end of the week with amounts ranging from 0.2 to 4.5 inches. Expect to see improvement in pastures and hayfields soon. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Need more rain! It's still very dry and things aren't looking to change. Rain scattered around the county this week and weekend. Corn suffering. Haying continues. Drought conditions worsen in the county. No rains falling this week and very hot temperatures are draining the little moisture that is in the ground. Pastures and hayfields under drought stress. Cattle are moving to market much earlier than normal. Very little hay supplies. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Dry land corn is about gone now. All planting done. Some scattered showers. Temperatures are going up. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Scattered showers have provided temporary relief from drought for 5 to 10% of acreage. Lack of subsoil moisture and heat slowing down plant growth on all crops. Within two weeks crop disaster can occur without substantial rains. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
