ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 8, 2007 Issue GA-CW2707 Agricultural Summary July 9, 2007 FARMERS BENEFITED BY RAIN Scattered showers throughout the week benefited farmers, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average highs were in the 80's most of the week. Average lows were in the 60's and lower 70's. There were scattered showers throughout the week. Still more rain will be needed to reduce the drought conditions and replenish water supplies. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated at 23% very short, 36% short, 40% adequate, and 1% surplus. Rains have helped crop conditions to at least remain stable and in many cases improve. Pastures and hayfields showed slight improvement, but there continued to be a grazing shortage. Livestock farmers were marketing cattle and weaning calves earlier than normal. Late planted cotton and peanuts looked good. Dryland corn was not faring well, but irrigated corn was in good condition. Spider mites were reported on tomatoes. Soybean planting continued. Other activities included cutting hay, feeding hay to cattle, topping and suckering tobacco, applying herbicides and fungicides to peanuts, fertilizing millet and cotton, and irrigating corn and tobacco. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Most have not occurred here, but in the surrounding counties. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Heavy thundershowers helped soil moisture conditions, leading to improvement in crop conditions. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Recent rains have helped to improve conditions. The area is dry, but not as bad as earlier this spring. Second cutting of hay is drawing near. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Rains have improved most crop conditions; too late for dryland corn. Conditions continue to deteriorate; widely scattered showers have helped some but not near enough. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Some good rain during the week. Around 2 inches in most parts of the county, more in some locations. Pasture and hayfield conditions improving slightly. Hay feeding continues for livestock. Rains scattered during the week. The weekend brought widespread rain across the county. Haying continues. Cotton fertilization beginning. Irrigated corn looking good, dryland not so good! Weed control will be the next hurdle! Some rains over the weekend helping some with replenishing soil moisture. Livestock, forage farmers still unable to make hay. Bermuda gets about 6 inches tall and heads out. Early weaning and marketing still going on. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Getting weekly showers in most places, hay and pasture definitely better. Peanuts looking good and cotton is catching up in growth stage after a slow start. Applying Boron and PRG's. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 1.89" rainfall. Soybean planting continues. Hay and pasture grazing shortage. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Getting dry again. Applying herbicides and fungicides to peanuts and applying sucker control to tobacco. Topping and suckering tobacco mostly by hand. Some machine topped. Some applying 15 pounds of nitrogen to tobacco. Cutting hay. Applying fertilizer to millet. Irrigation of corn and tobacco. In general late planted cotton and peanuts look good. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST We really need rain!!!
