ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 29, 2007 Issue GA-CW3007 Agricultural Summary July 30, 2007 CROPS SUSTAINED BY SHOWERS The State experienced scattered rains this week, but dry conditions still prevail, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. While rainfall for the state averaged 1.15 inches, the amounts reported for each station were widely varied. Some stations received only a few tenths of an inch, while others received well over two inches. Highs remained lower than normal for this time of year and averaged from the upper 80's to the lower 90's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 12% very short, 37% short, 49% adequate, and 2% surplus. Scattered showers and cooler temperatures have helped improve soil moisture and crop quality. Crops were in mostly fair to good condition despite the extremely dry weather they have been through. Chances improved for getting two cuttings of hay. Farmers expected their second cutting of hay to be better quality than the first. Weed pressure remained high. There has been an increase in pigweed resistance to herbicides in peanuts and cotton. Some worms have shown up in pastures. Other activities included pasture and hayfield fertilization, weed control, preparing hay equipment, scouting for insects, irrigating crops, and feeding hay to cattle. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork. Everything has greened-up and looking better. There is hay cutting occurring and if this continues, there is a good chance of getting two cuttings of hay. This is a much needed relief as compared to the previous few months. Scattered good rains. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Needed rain and cooler temperatures have helped maintain soil moisture somewhat. Spotty rain showers this week. Second cutting of hay will be improved over first. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Improvement continued last week with most of the county receiving some rain but some areas remain without the benefit. Pasture & hayfield fertilization, weed control, liming and hay equipment prep were some welcome tasks. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Some scattered showers around the county this week. Some hay producers cutting their first cutting of hay this year. Pasture and hayfield conditions improved slightly. Some hay feeding continues for livestock. We need more rain, it is that plain and simple. Rains occurred over the weekend and scattered during the week. Haying continues. Yields improving. Weed control in row crops. Scouting for insects. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Some March planted corn that got through freeze is ready but moisture is high and we are in a rainy, humid weather pattern. Some CEW activity in non-Bt cotton, aphid pressure in cotton still bad in places. Peanuts setting pods - not much insect activity in them. Scouting for stink bugs will get priority as we set bolls. More scattered showers. Hot humid temperatures. Grass and weeds are growing. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Thirty percent of the county received rainfall late Sunday night(0.7 to 1"). Reported sorghum and soybeans are late planted following vegetable crops. Majority of sorghum is silage sorghum for cattle feed. Due to drought conditions, hay that was harvested has been fed. We no longer have a tobacco crop in the county - the one grower was advised to mow it down. We received 0.29" of rainfall. Pigweed resistance to herbicide in peanut and cotton increasing. Scattered showers over most of the county. Some areas up to 1 inch some areas only .2-.3 inches. Topsoil moisture lasting only three days due to lack of subsoil moisture and heavy requirement by fruiting crops. Weed pressure remains problem due to poor weed control in dry conditions. Overall crops have improved somewhat this week; however delayed in maturity. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Cropping tobacco. Applying Mn and Boron, herbicides and fungicides on peanuts. Cutting and baling hay. Irrigation of crops. Need rain. Moisture is getting short. Some worms showing up in pastures. Gearing up to pick corn. Preparing to plant fall vegetables. Crop thus far looks pretty good despite what it has been thru and with rainfall scarce. About five percent of corn harvested. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
