ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date September 9, 2007 Issue GA-CW3607 Agricultural Summary September 10, 2007 CROP CONDITIONS VARIED The weather was warm and extremely dry this week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average high temperatures ranged from the upper 80's to the lower 90's. Average low temperatures were in the 60's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 29% very short, 35% short, 33% adequate, and 3% surplus. Crop conditions varied widely across the state depending on the amount of rainfall received and whether the crops were irrigated or dryland. In drier areas, development of peanuts, soybeans, and cotton was slowing down prematurely. Areas with better soil moisture conditions were expecting good peanut, soybean, and cotton crops. Some cotton was suffering from hardlock or boll-lock. Irrigated corn was yielding well. Some double cropped tropical corn was not yet mature. There were reports of armyworms attacking pastures and hayfields. There was some disease pressure in peanuts. Whiteflies were a concern for cotton producers. The heat wave in August set back most transplanted vegetables, but growth was now occurring with cooler daytime temperatures. Producers were preparing to plant winter grazing. Other activities included stripping tobacco, cutting hay, applying late season herbicides and fungicides, applying insecticides to crops and hayfields, applying growth regulator on cotton, and harvesting corn. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Rain still in very, very short supply. Temperatures have moderated. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No rain last week but slightly cooler temperatures. Some hay rolled, however a lot of that has been irrigated. Temporary winter grazing plans are being made and seed purchased. Additional thinning to some beef herds, lime and fertilizer applications made to pastures and hayfields. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Very little to no rain this week. A little cooler temperatures than past weeks. Armyworms beginning to show up in some hayfields and pastures. Some producers getting ready to overseed pastures for winter grazing. The rainfall was much needed. Unfortunately, it was a little too late for our crops. Haying continues. Cotton continuing to open. Soybeans loading up. Corn harvest almost complete. Producers preparing to plant winter grazing. Peanuts continue to peg. Even with the storms last week, landscape plants are getting beyond wilting point in the county. Farmers applied late season herbicide applications this week. A lot of hay was harvested this week. Several farmers applied insecticides to crops and hay fields this week due to insect pressure. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Armyworms are attacking pastures and hayfields in the county. Showers good for soybeans, peanuts, some open cotton suffering from hardlock. Irrigated corn yielding well over 200 bu/ac. Continues to be dry. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Moisture: earlier rainfall increased peanut flowering and pegging. Foliar feeders increasing in feeds but not to treatable levels. Hay producers expecting one last good cutting. Dry conditions on peanuts, soybeans, and cotton slowing down reproductive development. Many crops going down prematurely quickly. Still behind on rain! DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Some areas got a lot of rain last weekend. Scattered showers mostly in other parts of the county. Stripping tobacco, baling hay, spraying peanuts, cotton and soybeans for worms and applying growth regulator on cotton and applying fungicides on peanuts. Early May planted peanuts are about 2 weeks away from digging. Some disease pressure showing up in peanuts. Whiteflies a concern on cotton. FAW attacking pastures and hay fields. Finishing up corn harvest, some double cropped tropical corn still not mature. No soybean rust found or reported as of today. Heat wave this past month (August) has really set back most transplanted vegetables on plastic. Growth now occurring with cooler daytime temperatures. Late April and early May peanuts are 7-14 day from digging. Stinkbugs in cotton are highly variable. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST If it continues to rain like it has in the past 30 days looking for great crops this fall of cotton, soybeans, and peanuts.
