ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 11, 2007 Issue GA-CW4507 Agricultural Summary November 12, 2007 EARLY MORNING FROST AFFECTS CROPS It was another cold and extremely dry week across the state, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average high temperatures ranged from the upper 50's to the lower 70's. Average lows ranged from the upper 20's to the lower 40's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 45% very short, 41% short, 14% adequate, and 0% surplus. Early morning frost greeted most of the state several days during the week. The frost put hayfields and pastures into dormancy, and caused some frost damage to fall vegetable crops. The cold snap stalled the growth of peanuts and cotton and will hasten their harvest. Dry soil conditions continued to plague livestock and small grains producers. Some farmers were waiting on increased moisture before planting small grains. Those that had already planted were in desperate need of rain. Other activities included cotton defoliation, cutting and baling hay, and harvesting pecans. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL I have been an Extension Agent for 26 years. I have never seen it this dry going into winter. Without rain very soon 100% of pastures will be classed as very poor. By spring, water for livestock could be a very real problem. Hay is in short supply and thus very costly. Most wheat planted this week. Drought continues and pasture conditions are declining sharply. Some creeks going dry so that watering livestock may become an increasing problem. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Desperate need for water for winter grazing. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL It is dry. Need a rain. Dry! Ponds and stream levels continue to drop. Producers are waiting for moisture before planting small grains. Rolled some hay, fed more. Some winter grazing amazingly making progress, some more planted. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL No rain! Frost a couple of mornings this week. It is very dry. There's no denying we're in an extreme drought condition. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Some pretty good irrigated cotton and most all peanuts, irrigated and dry, yielded at least fair. In real danger of not getting wheat acreage planted as well as winter pasture for cattle due to extreme dry conditions. Some cattle will likely be liquidated before Christmas if conditions don't improve. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST No rainfall. Cotton defoliation continues. Dry weather preventing early plantings of fall wheat crop. Frost has put hayfields and pastures into dormancy. Two days of cold weather and frost has wrapped up late season peanut and cotton maturity. After cold snap rest of peanuts will be dug and cotton harvest will be in full swing. Cut last hay for the season before frost. Shaking pecan trees and picking up pecans. Planting small grains but need rainfall or irrigation to germinate. Dry. Need rain! Will begin to pick soybeans also. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Two scattered frost Thursday and Friday morning. Excellent harvesting conditions. Very dry soil conditions for fall planted grain and winter grazing forages. Cold weather slows peanut harvest and causes freeze and frost damage to fall vegetable crops. Lack of rainfall is making stand establishment very difficult with small grain cover crops and winter forages. On the other hand, cotton harvest is progressing quickly thanks to the drought.
