ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 18, 2007 Issue GA-CW4607 Agricultural Summary November 19, 2007 LIGHT RAIN ENCOURAGES PLANTING Rainfall was light and temperatures were highly variable during the week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average high temperatures ranged from the upper 50's to the upper 70's. Average lows ranged from the upper 20's to the lower 50's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 45% very short, 39% short, 16% adequate, and 0% surplus. A trace of rain encouraged planting of wheat and winter grazing. In many cases, winter grazing, planted earlier, has not emerged due to the drought. Small grains producers were hoping for moisture to get a stand or keep their stand alive. Some farmers were irrigating their wheat to advance stand development. Pasture and hayfield conditions continued to decline. Stock ponds have been going dry and some livestock producers were hauling in water. The weather was excellent for harvesting cotton, soybeans, pecans, and some late-planted peanuts. Other activities included mowing cotton stalks, planting small grains, feeding hay to livestock, and spreading poultry litter. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Pastures are for the most part in terrible shape. Most folks are feeding hay already. Stock ponds have been going dry for a long time. Some are hauling water. Folks that are going to plant fall plantings have done so by now and hoping for moisture to get a stand or to keep stand alive. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Badly needed rain fell this week - we are still approximately 29 inches short for the year to date. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL A trace of rain encouraged planting of wheat and additional winter grazing. Grazing planted earlier is stunted and not growing, some of it being grazed already. It just keeps getting worse. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Very dry and windy! We didn't even get enough rain to measure this week. Just a few sprinkles on Wednesday night. Pasture and hayfield conditions continue to decline and pond and stream levels continue to drop. Hay feeding to livestock increasing. Small grain producers waiting for rain before finishing up planting. Hope it comes soon. Lots of the winter grazing that has been planted has not even come up due to the drought. We only received a small sampling of rainfall. We are dry. Several wells have gone dry. Dry weather once again prevails. Winter grazing at risk to weather conditions. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Had first freeze, no rain, no pasture, no more grass, no hay to cut. Irrigated wheat planted, no dryland emergence. Drought becoming more critical. Top soil moisture is extremely low. Looking for rain over Thanksgiving weekend to plant small grain. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 0.10" of rainfall. Dry! DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Cold and need rain for small grains. Weather is excellent for cotton harvest and some late planted peanut harvest. Hay cutting is over. Mowing cotton stalks and planting small grains. Spreading poultry litter. Having to irrigate some wheat to get a stand. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
