ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 28, 2008 Issue GA-CW0408 Agricultural Summary January 28, 2008 COLD, WET CONDITIONS SLOW FIELDWORK The state received light scattered showers during the week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average high temperatures were in the mid- 40's to upper 50's. Average lows ranged from the lower 20's to the lower 40's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 4% very short, 14% short, 66% adequate, and 16% surplus. Rain showers, this week, continued to improve soil moisture conditions in some areas. The ground was too soft to support ground spraying. Growers were waiting for drier conditions to begin top-dressing fertilizer. Wheat was reported to be in good condition. Hay supplies were holding up. Cold, wet conditions slowed fieldwork. Other activities included planting tobacco seed in greenhouses, applying poultry litter, feeding hay to livestock, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Rain this week continued to improve soil moisture conditions. Routine care of livestock and poultry continues to be the main activity. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Routine care of livestock. Wheat in good condition. Stream flow, pond levels remain low. Soil moisture vanishes as quick as it appears. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL It has gotten very cold. The rainfall is much needed and greatly appreciated. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Plenty of moisture, getting quite a bit of freezing temperatures at night. Ground too soft to support ground spraying. Will be top-dressing fertilizer about the time we get dry. Hay supplies still holding up decently. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Received 0.3" of rainfall. Field activities slow due to rainfall. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Planting tobacco seed in greenhouses. Applying poultry litter and feeding livestock hay. Too wet and cold to do much field work.
