ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date February 11, 2008 Issue GA-CW0608 Agricultural Summary February 11, 2008 DROUGHT CONDITIONS PERSIST BUT RAIN HELPS The unseasonably warm weather continued into this week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the lower 60's to upper 70's. Average lows ranged from the lower 30's to the lower 50's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 5% very short, 17% short, 63% adequate, and 15% surplus. Most of the state received at least some rain on Wednesday. A number of fields remained wet due to the recent rains. Despite the rain, topsoil moisture levels declined slightly. Wheat producers were putting topdress fertilizer on the crop. There was concern that the warm temperatures would cause plants to bloom early. Winter grain mites were reported in ryegrass and wheat crops. Other activities included applying nitrogen to fields, deep turning land, burning pastures and hayfields, general farm work and repairs, feeding hay to livestock, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork.
