ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 2, 2008 Issue GA-CW4408 Agricultural Summary November 3, 2008 COOL AND DRY CONDITIONS The state experienced dry conditions accompanied by morning frost during the week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the low 60's most of the week. Average lows were in the 30's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 6% very short, 30% short, 61% adequate, and 3% surplus. Frosty conditions slowed peanut digging. Some producers harvested their last cutting of hay for the year. Rain was needed for planting winter grazing and other grains. None of the reporting weather sites reported rain during the week. Other activities included planting winter grazing and small grains. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Apple harvest has gone very well for the year. Most producers are reporting higher than average yields in most blocks. Fruit quality and size has been very good for the 2008 season. Heavy frost this week, rain needed. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL No rain and frost a couple of morning this week. Small grain and winter grazing planting continues. Producers harvesting their last cutting of hay for the year. Cold and dry best describes our conditions. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL 1.5" rain on the 24th and then frosty conditions culminating with our first freeze on 31st has slowed digging and defoliating. Peanut thrashing and cotton picking resumed Wednesday. Cotton is surpassing expectations and peanuts are yielding well also. Still not many soybean yields to report and I imagine we'll be down in wheat acres. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Unusual early frost 3 mornings. Some damage to cotton and soybean leaves. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL The past 10 days have been very for harvesting crop in south Georgia. We need more rain for small grain planting! DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
