ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 23, 2008 Issue GA-CW4708 Agricultural Summary November 24, 2008 COOL TEMPERATURES Cool temperatures and lack of rain slowed crop progress in the state, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the upper 50's and lower 60's most of the week. Average lows were in the 20's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 6% very short, 39% short, 53% adequate, and 2% surplus. Some crops suffered freeze damage from the cold weather. Several peanut fields received heavy frost, causing a delay in harvest. Despite the rain received the previous week, some areas still need more. Farmers were able to continue picking cotton despite having to wait for some fields to dry from the previous week's rain. Other activities included harvesting soybeans, planting small grain for grazing, irrigating crops as needed and applying fertilizer. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Routine care of livestock and poultry. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST High winds quickly dried out last week's rain. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Cooler than normal temperatures. Despite getting a large amount of rainfall last Thursday, we are still hurting. We've only gotten 4 inches of rainfall since the beginning of the month. Need rain. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Pecan crop varied, younger trees seem to be yielding better than mature trees. Mature trees seem to be back to vigor after suffering from the April '07 freeze. Still a lot of breakage of old deadwood caused by freeze coming down when shaken this year. Overall yield is fair to low-good. Less wheat being planted, ryegrass already a problem in fields with history of ryegrass. Cotton got wet late last week during rain event and has been drying most of the week. Still a pretty fair amount of cotton to pick. Too wet early in the week to make much progress with soybean harvest but clear weather will help. Several peanut fields got hit by heavy frost/freeze and are just now being dug. Harvest should wrap up in another week if the weather holds. Peanut and cotton yields, on average, are lower but comparable to last year's yields although we didn't get the late warmth to complete to top crop of cotton. County average......early guesstimate would be cotton-800 lbs/A, peanuts 2,800 lb/A, soybeans- (dryland needed one more rain event but we had more under pivot), about 36 bu/A. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Picking up pecans. Mowing cotton stalks and still planting small grains. Crops need rain. Getting dry. Worming cattle. Harrowing tobacco stalks. Finishing up cotton harvest. The cold weather cause damages to the fall vegetables and has not been good for planting small grains. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Freeze killed all summer annual crops.
