ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date December 7, 2008 Issue GA-CW4908 Agricultural Summary December 8, 2008 COLD AND WET CONDITIONS Areas of the state benefited from the rainfall on last week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Conditions continued to be dry, however. Daily average high temperatures were in the 50's most of the week. Average lows were in the 30's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 3% very short, 15% short, 61% adequate, and 21% surplus. Fall vegetables have been doing well despite the cold temperatures. Snow, in the northern part of the State, didn't prevent farmers from maintaining livestock. Small grains benefited from the rain on last week. There was cotton left to be harvest in some areas. Some fieldwork was prevented due to weekend rains. Other activities included planting small grain for grazing, irrigating crops as needed and applying fertilizer. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT COMMENTS December 7, 2008 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST We received less than one-half inch yesterday; but, it was a slow, steady, good ground soaking type rain. We'll take all we can get, it is still very much needed. We "enjoyed" snow showers last week and it has been in the twenties just about every night. Burrr! DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Three inches of snow on Monday did not hurt crops, but did make taking care of livestock more difficult. Got good rain this past week. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We received 2.71 inches of rain over the past 7 days. Our fall vegetables are looking good. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Wet weather is still keeping some producers from completing wheat planting and drilling in winter annual grazing. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Farmers are still planting wheat. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Wet, rainy, and cold. We got about 4-5 inches of rainfall last weekend. Small grains needed it. Some cotton left to harvest. The heavy rains that occurred last week prevented field work early part of this week. The small acres of cole crops are during well at this report time. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
