ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 12, 2009 Issue GA-CW2809 Agricultural Summary July 13, 2009 SCATTERED SHOWERS Widely scattered rains, throughout the state, provided relief to stressed crops, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the 80's. Average lows were in the high 60's most of week. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 12% very short, 37% short, 47% adequate, and 4% surplus. In some areas, recent thunderstorms improved top soil moisture. The much needed rain assisted peanuts pegging. Soybean fields were being sprayed to prevent corn earworms from causing further damage to the crop. Some corn tassels twisted and turned brown due to stress. There were reports of White Mold in tobacco crops. Other activities included applying weed control to some late planted peanuts and cotton. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Some hay cut this week, spotty thunderstorms across the county relieved drought conditions in some areas but left other areas still short on moisture. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Over 2 inches rain on July 5 was just in time on forages and soybeans; rain July 12 as well has soil moisture in good shape for now. Some early corn earworms in beans causing enough loss to merit sprays; hayfields need some dry days this week to get off next cut; pastures are staying green with growth returned over last week. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have received 0.60 inches worth of rainfall over the past 7 days. Our corn crop has started to stress with many of the tassels starting to brown and twist. Mid week rains a welcomed sight. The battle of the pigweed continues with some success. Need more rain. Scattered showers and overcast skies have helped put some moisture back in the ground and grow plants. Drought stress has been relieved somewhat. We need rain! DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Peanuts pegging down well after needed rains and cooler temperatures. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Getting daily showers. Concern for soil and foliar diseases. No hay cutting. Applying herbicides, fungicides and some insecticides to cotton and peanuts. Pecan crop looks fair. Peanut crop late and skippy stands. Cotton weak and tobacco crop is sorry. We can only hope for timely periodic rainfall and a long growing season which means a late frost This has been overcast and spotted rain over the county, however this weather is very good for pasture and new hay crop! The cotton and peanut crops are during good with this rainfall! The tobacco crop has affected by white Mold(yes), the same kind that affect peanut! DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
