ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 4, 2009 Issue GA-CW0109 Agricultural Summary January 5, 2009 LIGHT RAIN The weather was cool until mid-week; temperature became warm with light rain for the weekend, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average high temperatures ranged from the upper 50's to the upper 60's. Average lows ranged from the upper 20's to the lower 50's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 6% short, 76% adequate, and 18% surplus. Most of the state received much needed rainfall during the last week of December. In some areas, topsoil moisture was recovering. Small grains looked better as a result of the increased moisture. The warm weather had a positive affect on the winter vegetable crop. Other activities included feeding livestock, general poultry house work, and preparing greenhouses for seeding tobacco plants. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have not gotten much in terms of significant rainfall over the past 7 days. Late December has seen a lot of rain fall locally.
