ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date January 18, 2009 Issue GA-CW0309 Agricultural Summary January 20, 2009 COLD AND WINDY CONDITIONS The state experienced low temperatures, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average high temperatures ranged from the upper 30's to mid-50's. Average low ranged from the lower 20's to lower 30's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 1% very short, 8% short, 77% adequate, and 14% surplus. Cold temperatures slowed field work and concerned some growers about the growth of winter forages and grains. Early planted wheat showed signs of needing nitrogen. Ryegrass control in wheat began in some areas. Hay feeding to livestock continued. Other activities included applying herbicide application to wheat, ordering corn, cotton, and soybean seed, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork.
