ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date February 1, 2009 Issue GA-CW0509 Agricultural Summary February 2, 2009 WARMER WEATHER The state experienced warmer weather this week, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily high temperatures averaged from the mid-50's to upper 60's. Average lows were in the upper 20's to the mid-40's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 12% short, 79% adequate, and 9% surplus. More warm weather will be needed to stimulate small grains growth. The effects of the extreme cold weather, experienced in January, were beginning to show up in pastures and other crops. Some areas report that cattle will be out of winter grazing soon. Tobacco growers report that plants in greenhouses are satisfactory. Farmers were making preparations for spring planting; applying nitrogen and spraying for weeds. Other activities included feeding hay to livestock, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Pasture conditions declining, some cold damage on wheat but appears minimal. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have gotten around .0.37 of an inch of rainfall over the past seven days. The temperatures have cooled off significantly. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Warmer weather has helped wheat growth. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Wet and cool. Harrowing fields and spreading poultry litter. Prescribed fire in pine forest. Small grains need some good weather to help grow. Cattle will soon be out of winter grazing in general. Tobacco plants in greenhouses are doing okay. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Winter grazing of small grains have been disappointing due to colder than normal weather. Cattlemen continue to feed more hay than normal with winter grazing.
