ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date April 19, 2009 Issue GA-CW1609 Agricultural Summary April 20, 2009 WET CONDITIONS CONTINUED TO HAMPER PLANTING Much of Georgia experienced sunny and cool temperatures, with beginning and end of the week rainfall, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures range from the mid-60's to mid-70's. Average lows range from the mid-40's to low-50's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 1% short, 58% adequate, and 41% surplus. Tornadoes in Hancock County caused some agricultural damage. Pecan growers lost trees and there were livestock losses as well. More rainfall caused further delays in preparing fields and pecan spraying. In some areas, wet conditions have restricted fertilizer applications to pastures, slowed cutting small grains and prevented corn planting and replanting. Diseases spread in wheat, primarily powdery mildew. Other activities included preparation for and planting row crop, pasture weed control, and routine care of livestock and poultry. County Extension Agents reported an average of 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Liming, fertilizing, weed control in pastures and hayfields. Prepping hay equipment for service. Cut some winter mixes for hay, but it's slow to dry. Routine care of livestock and poultry. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We survived another round of tornadoes in Hancock county. We saw some agricultural damage as one pecan producer lost over 100 trees and there were several livestock losses as well. We received around 2.54 inches of rainfall over the last 7 days. Fields too wet to get into to work. Disease spreading in wheat, primarily powdery mildew. Wet conditions have restricted fertilizer applications to pastures, slowed progress on cutting ryegrass silage and hay and also prevented corn planting. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST From 1.5 to 3.0 additional inches of rainfall this week. Another big rain Monday has delayed corn planting and pecan spraying. Soil moisture remains high. There are washes in corn fields. Planting will probably resume in full force next week. Received 2 to 3 more inches of rain this week slowing down field operations. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Still too wet to plant or replant. Hope to set tobacco by end of next week. Clipping tobacco plants. Most farmers are trying to decide what to plant. Between the loss of Poultry plant and over 13-16 inches of rainfall (we got about 2.5 more inches on Monday), farmers are depressed and wondering what to do. Hopefully things will dry out and we can get to work. We have been getting a number of gardening and fruit tree type calls due to warm Spring like weather. More rainfall causes further delays in repairing fields and replanting. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
