ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date May 3, 2009 Issue GA-CW1809 Agricultural Summary May 4, 2009 WEEKEND RAIN Much of state experienced sunny temperatures and dry conditions during the week with rain over the weekend, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the low 80's. Average lows were in the upper 50's and low 60's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 1% very short, 31% short, 64% adequate, and 4% surplus. Rains, late in the week, provided needed moisture. In some areas, low spots were still wet while higher ground had dried. Cotton planting continued; dry land planting was slow due to lack of topsoil moisture. Hay and pastures were being fertilized. Corn planting neared completion. Farmers were side dressing and spraying herbicide. Wheat was maturing with no disease issues. Other activities included cutting hay, transplanting tobacco, spreading litter on cotton land, applying herbicides and bedding the land for peanuts. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Rain showers late in the week, major activities include routine care of livestock and poultry, routine spraying of vineyards. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have dried fairly well. We have begun to catch up on our planting. Topsoil moisture is very low. Need rain! Hay and pastures being fertilized. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Baling surplus ryegrass with Bermuda and Bahia trying to get started. Some replanted corn up and growing. Corn crop finally planted and some ready for sidedress and herbicide sprays. Turned off dry for the last 10 days which makes cotton planting difficult. Will be starting this coming week with irrigated fields and showers forecasted may bring needed rain. Wheat turning and no disease issues. No winter/late freeze damage to rye, wheat or barley. Some full-season soybeans may be planted this week. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Cotton planting began this week. Dryland cotton slow due to lack of topsoil moisture. Stands emerging fast. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Cutting hay and planting tobacco. Applying herbicides to get land ready to plant. Applying nitrogen to corn. Tillage and land preparation. Gearing up for next weeks big peanut planting time. Land is very dry on the hills and wet in the bottoms. Cotton and peanut planting will begin in earnest the week of May 4.
