ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date June 7, 2009 Issue GA-CW2309 Agricultural Summary June 8, 2009 DELAYED PLANTING AND HARVESTING Planting and harvesting were hindered by wet fields, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures ranged from the lower 80's to lower 90's. Average lows were in the 60's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 6% short, 68% adequate, and 26% surplus. Rain slowed harvesting and caused quality to deteriorate in wheat and hay. Farmers were concerned about diseases in all crops due to wet conditions. High temperatures, early in the week, dried some fields that were affected by recent rains. However, in some areas, mid week rains drowned tobacco fields in low spots. There have been reports of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) in tobacco fields. Other activities included planting peanuts, cotton and soybeans. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Remaining wheat cut for silage, some hay damaged due to wet weather. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Scattered rain still hampers hay baling. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Most of the cattlemen have been baling hay this past week. They report excellent yield but fair quality. Rains have delayed some hay cutting by up to three weeks, so many farmers have been disappointed in the maturity of their Bermuda grass by the time conditions dried up enough to cut and bale hay. It is still wet in some areas. Peanut and cotton planting is running behind. Corn looks ok. Wheat harvest beginning, putting in hay. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Wheat harvest in full swing. Some hay producers harvesting hay. We have had a relatively dry week with the exception of 0.02 inches of rainfall on May 29. Temperatures soared early part of the week drying out soils that had gotten lots of rain last week. Slow and steady rains returning late week to replenish some soil moisture. Hay harvesting has been well underway this spring. Frequent rains have hampered harvesting and curing of hay. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Planting has been going full speed for about 7 or 8 days. Lots of peanut and cotton acres have been planted! Wheat and oat harvest has also been going at a fast pace. There have been some problems with sprouted wheat. Tobacco drowning in some fields. Heavy TSWV on tobacco. Wet fields are making it very hard to finish planting crops. Fair amount of damaged/sprouted wheat. Corn being sprayed for stinkbugs. Still getting timely rain, finally catching up on planting. Very few late peanuts after wheat, probably a lot of soybeans in lieu of cotton due to lateness of season. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Wet, wet, wet. Need some planting weather. Concerned about diseases in all crops due to wet, humid conditions. Still need to plant cotton and peanuts but getting late. Small grain yield and quality down. Lots of soil erosion. Hay fields need cutting. Been a tough year. This past week we got lot of rain. Pasture, pecan, and hay are during really good. The tobacco has got too much water in some places; only in low spot in the grower fields. In general our crop looks very good at this stage of production! DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
