ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date June 15, 2009 Issue GA-CW0107 Agricultural Summary June 15, 2009 WARMER TEMPERATURES Warmer temperatures and dryer weather were beneficial to crop progress according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures fluctuated between the high 80's and low 90's. Average lows were in the 60's most of week. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 1% very short, 16% short, 70% adequate, and 13% surplus. Recent rain prevented growers from applying herbicides to crops. As a result, fields had more weeds than farmers would like. Tobacco fields were being side dressed. The tobacco crop continued to have disease problems. There have been reports of drowning of tobacco plants. Some areas planted late cotton, peanuts and soybeans. Wheat producers reported reduced quality in their crop as the seed continued to sprout in the head. Wheat harvest was very active while hay cutting and bailing remained behind schedule. Other activities include vegetables harvest and routine care of livestock and poultry. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Putting in hay, finishing wheat harvest, prepping to plant soybeans, and routine care of livestock & poultry. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We are faring well in terms of ground moisture. We have gotten most of our planting done. Farmers market starts Saturday. Good crops of potatoes, squash, onions, and Chinese radish reported. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Majority of wheat harvested sprouted. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Hot, humid, and some parts of fields still wet. Planting late cotton, peanuts and some soybeans. Trying to apply herbicides to crops, but been wet and weeds are getting a jump on the crops. Sidedressing tobacco, but tobacco crop is worst I have seen in years due to disease and drowning. Has been good weather for cutting hay. Picking summer squash and sweet corn coming in. Need some good weather This pass week has been very good for farmers in Lowndes county to get more planting done and in general more field work completed. We have been dry all this week; that's been good for farmers! This dry period has allowed tobacco to recover from wet conditions, and vegetables harvesting to go smoothly. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Sunshine across the area.
