DISTRICT COMMENTS July 19, 2009 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Received 0.9 inches of rainfall early last week but it's been dry for the last 6 days. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Hay production slowed to a halt with lack of consistent rain. Pastures dry and sparse. Area desperately needs rain to improve forages & hay. Extremely dry throughout the county. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Corn silage harvest is starting up. Producers planting some late soybeans after corn silage. Worm pressure high in cotton. Most corn is 1/2 milkline and further. Slightly cooler over last week with rainfall early in the week provided good conditions for forage growth. Good hay making days forecast this week is welcome as lots of hay down now and more headed that way. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Dry weather continues. Topsoil moisture very low. Weed control continues on row crops. Haying continues for only those who have had rain. Most hayfields waiting on rain to grow another cutting. Soil moisture getting low again. Some pastures getting drought stressed again. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Scattered rains have been helpful. Some areas, however, still have not received much rain. Peanut soil fungicides and boron going out along with cotton PGR. No insect pressure but square retention on dry land cotton is getting worse and late- planted soybeans need a rain to catch up. Weed control, overall, is best in peanuts, pretty good in cotton and just adequate in beans. A lot of escaped pigweed that will need to be hand pulled or hit with a wick-bar to prevent seeding. Corn crop looks good, possibly helped by cooler night temperatures during pollination and kernel fill. No disease other than some Northern leaf blight that never became a problem. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL This week have continue to get spotted rain over the county! Some parts of the county is going into the fourth week without rain, these area need rain! DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
