ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date August 9, 2009 Issue GA-CW3209 Agricultural Summary August 10, 2009 ISOLATED SHOWERS Isolated showers brought relief to some dry fields and pastures, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the low 90's most of the week. Average lows were in the high 60's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 7% very short, 35% short, 54% adequate, and 4% surplus. In some areas, recent rains have improved soil moisture, pastures and hayfields; however, other areas had less rain and high temperatures, which caused pastures and hayfields to decline and crops to stress. Some areas have spotted fall armyworms in fields. Cotton fields were sprayed for worms. Tobacco harvest continues, but lags behind the five year average. Peach harvest is winding down, and apple harvest is underway. Other activities included irrigating crops as needed, cutting hay, picking tobacco, and feeding livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT COMMENTS August 9, 2009 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Received 0.9 inches of rain early last week but nothing since. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Lack of rain this week and high temperatures increased moisture stress on most crops -major activity is harvesting hay. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Rain needed again after a week of hot, dry conditions. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL A return to dry weather last week; soil moisture is limited and rain is needed this week. Baled some hay, sprayed for worms in millet. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have gotten 0.90 of an inch of rainfall over the past seven days. We are starting to see some signs of disease outbreak on some plants and trees. Has been really dry for the past 3 weeks. Then got over 6 inches of rain in the past week. Early planted soybeans blooming out the top; haying; spraying for weeds; need more rain in certain parts of the county. Recent rains have helped replenish soil moisture and revive pastures and hayfields. Starting to get reports of fall armyworms in some fields. Several farmers are in the process of weaning calves. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Have received several days of scattered showers, nothing countywide but a lot of dry fields and pasture got some relief. Is it too late or just in time. My thinking is that we still have a good many dry land, late planted beans and cotton that are just not going to have much time to bloom and set a crop before cooler, shorter days arrive. No peanut insects causing damage enough to spray. Very little fungicide going on soybeans as we begin our dimilin/boron sprays. Corn has pretty much matured but is slow drying down. Two growers tried to pick this week but stopped due to high moisture. Our sunflower 'crop' is very slow drying down and will probably be harvested after corn when that "90 day crop" will be about 120 days old. A lot of 'short' cotton blooming near the top and will need continued rain to have a chance. Peanuts are doing well and that crop has the best weed control. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Rain chances daily. Cutting hay and picking tobacco. Spraying cotton for worms and foliar feed. Irrigation of crops where possible. Crops as a whole look fair to good. but need more rain and no disease or insect pressure and a late fall. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
