ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date October 5, 2009 Issue GA-CW4009 Agricultural Summary October 5, 2009 FLOOD RECOVERY Damaged crops have been trying to recover from the recent flood, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the high 70's. Average lows were in the 50's most of week. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 2% very short, 14% short, 68% adequate, and 16% surplus. Heavy rains destroyed hayfields in the northern part of the state, with some hay being left molded from excessive moisture. Due to the recent flooding some farmers are unsure if the yellowing in soybeans has been due to soil saturation. Heavy rains have delayed the harvest of several crops. Boll rot has appeared in some cotton. Other activities included growers cutting hay. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork.
