ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date October 18, 2009 Issue GA-CW4209 Agricultural Summary October 19, 2009 RAINY WEATHER The state continued to experience rainy weather, preventing some farmers from entering fields, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the 70's during the week and dropped to the 50's by the weekend. Average lows ranged from the low 50's to the upper 30's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 3% short, 50% adequate, and 47% surplus. Some growers were in need of dryer weather to continue planting and harvesting. Harvest was delayed for some cotton and peanuts crops, due to frequent rains. Excessive rain caused some pecan crops to scab. In some areas, corn that has not been harvested is starting to sprout. Other activities included digging peanuts, servicing harvest equipment, and cutting and baling hay. County Extension Agents reported an average of 2.8 days suitable for fieldwork.
