ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 15, 2009 Issue GA-CW4609 Agricultural Summary November 16, 2009 MID-WEEK SHOWERS Scattered showers, in the middle of the week, hindered harvest, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures ranged form the mid 60's to mid 70's. Average lows were in the 40's most of the week. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 5% short, 63% adequate, and 32% surplus. Heavy rain that came in the middle of the week delayed field work and caused flooding to pastures and wetlands in some areas of the State. The rain provided moisture that assisted the continuation of small grain planting. Cotton, soybeans and peanut harvest are still behind. Other activities included harvesting soybeans, planting small grain for grazing and applying fertilizer. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Received 5+" of rain in one day, has everything very wet. Received 3.6 inches of rain on Wednesday. Slight flooding of pastures and wetlands along the Conasauga Thursday but nothing significant. Water back down within banks this morning. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Heavy rain this week delayed field work, major activities are the routine care of livestock and poultry DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Received 4.5 inches of rain from Ida. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Most of the county received more than 5" of rain. We continue to have a wetter than normal fall. Rain from the hurricane that passed has spurred several calls of grub infestations. Rain, 5+ inches, slowed soybean harvest but it resumed over weekend and yields are good. Heavy rains saturated the county on Tuesday and Wednesday. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL This has been an off year for many of our pecan producers. Ida brought a tremendous amount of rainfall. We received 3.09 inches of rainfall on 11/10/09 and 11/11/09 saw receiving 1.30 inches. Wet! Rains slowing harvesting on all crops. Five inches of rain during this week. Some pasture land washed away this week. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL We are way behind in harvest and Ida brought anywhere from 1.5 - 2.5" on ground that is already saturated. Cotton is taking a beating and beginning to fall out on the ground. Many fields will be not harvestable for at least 8-10 days. Can't do anything in this wet weather, we'll be picking cotton till Christmas. Peanuts still yielding well, but that harvest isn't half done either. Dry land and irrigated soybeans are yielding well but again, there's the chance they could rot in the fields or at least shatter badly when harvested. We have gone from a late harvest to a long, drawn-out harvest and we're not expecting any sustained clear weather from here on. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Cooler temperatures and wet soils will delay drying of peanut vines, and thus, combining. Rainy weather delayed cotton and peanut harvest. Good for small grains. We got about 1.5-2 inches of rain. Cotton averaging 2.25 bales and peanuts averaging 3500 pounds with good grades. Hope Ida didn't affect cotton quality. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
