ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 22, 2009 Issue GA-CW4709 Agricultural Summary November 23, 2009 HARVEST ACTIVE The State experienced cool and dry weather most of the week and showers on Sunday which slowed some crop progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the 60's most of the week. Average lows were in the 40's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 2% very short, 6% short, 65% adequate, and 27% surplus. In most areas, fields were able to dry from recent rains, giving farmers the opportunity to continue harvesting. Light showers in the middle of the week and Sunday showers slowed planting and harvesting in some areas. Cotton, soybeans and peanut harvest remain behind. Other activities included harvesting soybeans, planting small grain for grazing, applying fertilizer and routine care of livestock and poultry. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Some areas of the county got more but I don't have exact numbers. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Showers were spotty this week across county, the major activities included routine care of livestock and poultry DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Light showers held things where they were. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Fields dried to allow the soybean harvest to continue and is mostly over; rain from Sunday has fields too wet to plant wheat/small grains. Cool season forages in fair shape. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We've been fortunate that we've gone without rainfall over the past 7 days. We've topped in the 70's and bottomed out in the 40's at night. It's still not completely dried out in terms of doing field work. A lot of the winter grasses have yet to go into the ground. Asian Rust discovered in Newton County this week. Hay is done in Peach County, much progress has been made in harvesting and planting due to clear weather DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Finally got some extended good weather and have made much progress on peanuts and soybeans. The bulk of the cotton harvest is still ahead of us but things look much better now than 8-10 days ago. Pecan yield is erratic, Stuarts haven't even opened good. Have some spotty 3 bale cotton and the dry land cotton we didn't expect to make a bale is going 550-650 lbs. Soybeans are still in the 50 bushel range and the irrigated beans aren't that much better than the dry land beans. Peanut yield is very good owing to the fact that we had over 80% of our acres planted in Ga-06G which is turning out 5,000+ lb/A pretty consistently. Interest in wheat planting is perking up with the market and growers are to a point in harvest where they can actually think about planting wheat. Behind on harvesting and planting due to excessive wet weather. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We had some great weather for harvesting this week with the exception of a cloudy day. Cotton harvest is not far from being done. Soybean harvest is well underway. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL This week has been very good for harvesting cotton and the last of the peanut harvesting. Pecans are in full mode of harvesting the crop. The fall vegetable crops are coming to an end; cool weather and low prices. The cold crops (cabbage crop) look good and harvesting will start in 10-12 days. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
